Olson's Walk-Off Single Saves ATL After Colorado's Late Surge
Matt Olson singled to right in the tenth inning to score Drake Baldwin and give Atlanta a 3-2 win over Colorado on August 30. The Rockies had erased a two-run deficit to tie it in the eighth, but couldn't hold the Braves off in extras.
Atlanta looked in control early. Sean Murphy launched a 407-foot home run to center in the third inning to put the Braves up 1-0, and Ronald Acuña Jr. followed shortly after with an RBI single to left that scored Riley and pushed the lead to 2-0. Tyler Mahle was doing his part on the mound — 6.2 innings, 5 hits, 1 earned run, zero walks, and 9 strikeouts. That's a dominant outing by any measure, and the story of the night looked like it was going to be Mahle simply shutting Colorado down.
Except Colorado had other ideas. Jake McCarthy cut it to 2-1 with a 391-foot home run to right in the sixth, and then Connor Norby singled to left in the eighth to score B. Sullivan and tie the game at 2-2. That single was the biggest swing of the night — Atlanta's win probability dropped from 82% to 63% on that one play. The Rockies had clawed all the way back, and suddenly a game that felt settled was anything but. Mason Adams had taken over for Ryan Feltner on the Colorado side and gave the Rockies five innings of two-run ball, keeping them in it long enough for the offense to catch up.
But Atlanta answered in the tenth. Baldwin reached and eventually scored on Olson's single to right, with Acuña Jr. moving to second on the play. That was the ballgame — COL 2, ATL 3, final. Acuña Jr. finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, Baldwin went 2-for-5 and scored the winning run, and Victor Mederos threw a clean inning of relief to close it out. The Rockies' comeback attempt was real and it was loud, but Atlanta's lineup had just enough left to answer. Colorado's bullpen and offense gave them a genuine shot — that much is clear — but the Braves, to their credit, didn't flinch when the margin disappeared.
