Young is done for the year; Baty inherits first base to close it out
The concussion diagnosis is official, and Jared Young won't play again this season. I noted the collision with McLean last week; now we have the endpoint. Young is on the 7-Day IL in the grounding, but with 11 games left and a concussion protocol that rarely moves quickly, his year is effectively over.
That hands first base to Brett Baty, who is already the depth chart's second option at the position. Baty has also logged time at third base and right field this season, so the Mets have used him as a utility piece throughout — he's not a stranger to the role, just not the preferred answer at it. His season line is modest, and he's been more valuable as a versatile body than as a corner bat.
Mark Vientos and Eric Wagaman are the names behind Baty on the depth chart, which tells you how thin this gets. None of this matters for the standings — the Mets were eliminated some time ago and have 11 games left in a 69-83 season. But it's one more thing to file under the 2026 injury ledger, which has been relentless from April onward.
