Wright Is Done for the Year. Barnett Is the Answer, for Now.
Alex Wright went on injured reserve Saturday with a ruptured Achilles, the injury confirmed after he was carted off the joint practice field against Buffalo five days ago. Derek Barnett was signed the same day as a replacement. That is the transaction. It is also, at this point, a familiar rhythm for this roster.
The part worth noting is where the depth chart now sits. Barnett is listed as the top defensive end by playing time, which tells you everything about how quickly this rotation has been assembled. Jared Verse, Jamil Muhammad, and Barnett himself were all added within the last two weeks — none of them were part of the plan when Myles Garrett was still here. They are the plan now.
I wrote last week that this edge group was held together by players who hadn't played. That remains true, with Wright now removed from the equation entirely. Barnett is a veteran who has been around — he has seen meaningful NFL snaps — but he is a stopgap addition, not a solution. The Browns needed a rotation. They are still building one, in real time, with the preseason clock running out.
