Winston Is the Quarterback Now. Haener Is the Backup. That's the Whole List.
Already covered the initial news in the September 23 note — Dart's knee, Winston inheriting the job, the margin shrinking. What's worth adding now is just how thin the quarterback room actually is. The depth chart lists Jake Haener second. That's it. Two quarterbacks on the active roster, one of whom has never started a regular-season game.
Winston is active and healthy, which matters. He's a veteran who has started games in this league, and the running game around him — Tyrone Tracy, Cam Skattebo, Najee Harris — gives the offense a structure that doesn't require him to carry everything. Harbaugh's power-running identity was always going to be the load-bearing wall here, and that part of the roster is intact.
The concern is purely about what happens if Winston misses a snap. Haener was signed in August as a depth piece, not a starter. Andrew Thomas is also Questionable, so the offensive line protecting whoever is back there isn't fully settled either. The Giants have enough to function with Winston upright. They don't have much of a plan if he isn't.
