Weems is the new GM in Cleveland
The Cavaliers are promoting Brandon Weems to general manager, the team confirmed Thursday. Weems joined the organization in 2015 as a scout and has spent the past decade working his way through the front office. He steps into the role vacated when Mike Gansey departed for Philadelphia earlier this offseason.
The timing is notable. Weems inherits a roster that was largely assembled without him in the GM chair — the Harden return, the Peyton Watson acquisition, the Tre Mann trade all came together over the summer under the previous regime. His first real test will be the margins: managing depth, monitoring the injury situation around the roster's thinner pieces, and making the in-season calls that come with the job.
Cleveland heads into training camp with its core intact and its offseason business essentially finished. What Weems does with the quieter decisions — the two-way spots, the buyout market in February, the small pivots that don't make headlines — is where a new GM usually announces himself. Worth watching.
