Week 7 Is the First Real Test of What This Offense Can Be
Tank Dell is active for Sunday against the Giants, ending a layoff that stretched nearly two years from a gruesome injury. The Texans confirmed the move Friday, and it lands at a moment when Houston finally has something resembling a complete receiver room: Collins healthy, Harrison Jr. settling in, Noel producing, Hutchinson absorbing slot volume, and now Dell back in the mix. That is a different group than the one that stumbled through the first four weeks.
The question the Giants game actually answers is whether the last two wins were a floor or a ceiling. Houston beat Tennessee 26-3 and then held on against Jacksonville 34-31, and Stroud — nine touchdowns, one interception through seven games — earned AFC Offensive Player of the Week for his effort in that stretch. The offense has been functional. With a full complement of weapons for the first time all season, functional is no longer the standard.
Dell's role will be limited to start; that much is reasonable to expect after nearly two years away. But his presence alone changes what defenses have to account for, and that matters for Collins, Harrison, and everyone else in the route tree. The Giants, meanwhile, are down Theo Johnson and Jevon Holland heading into the game, so the matchup sets up as well as any Houston will see in the next month.
At 2-4, two games out of the wild card with 11 to play, the Texans cannot afford to treat a favorable draw as a given. They get one here. What they do with it will say more about this offense than the last two wins combined.
