Week 1 in Denver, and the Chiefs are starting an undrafted rookie at left tackle
Mahomes is Active, cleared, and ready to go against the Broncos. The offensive line in front of him is a different matter. Kahlil Benson, who went undrafted out of college and is listed as the top tackle on the depth chart, will protect Mahomes' blindside on the road in a division opener. That is where things stand heading into Week 1.
I've been tracking this situation since August — the Simmons uncertainty, the Benson emergence by default — and the short version is that nothing has resolved cleanly. Benson gets the job not because the Chiefs built toward him but because the alternatives thinned out. The Chiefs traded Wanya Morris to Atlanta during the offseason, and that move looks starker now with a rookie lining up in his place against a Broncos front that will know exactly where to apply pressure.
The road piece of this matters too. Kansas City went 1-7 away from Arrowhead last season, and the mental fragility that defined that split doesn't disappear because Mahomes is healthy. Opening on the road, with a recovering quarterback behind an unproven left tackle, is about as hard a first test as the schedule could have handed them. We'll find out quickly whether 2026 is a reset or more of the same.
