Washington Trades a Pitching Prospect to San Francisco, Gets Nate Furman Back
The Nationals sent minor-league pitcher Tony Neubeck to the Giants on Sunday and received Nate Furman in return. That's the transaction. It's a quiet early-offseason swap, the kind that gets logged and mostly forgotten — except that it's the first roster move of what figures to be a busy few months in Washington.
The rotation context matters here. Five pitchers finished the season on the 60-Day IL — Waldichuk, Waldron, Millas, Poulin, and Parker — and the back end of the staff was a problem even before the injuries piled up. Miles Mikolas and Jake Irvin each went 3-10, and Zack Littell was unreliable out of the bullpen all year. Cade Cavalli and Foster Griffin gave the organization something real to build around, but everything behind them needs work. Trading a minor-league arm for a position player suggests the front office sees the pitching depth as thin enough to spend from, which is worth noting.
The larger backdrop is that Mike Rizzo has been interviewing with the Astros, and whoever ends up running this front office will inherit the decisions that follow from here. Furman arriving is one small piece of a roster that will look considerably different by spring.
