Washington's Quarterback Room Has One Name That Matters, and No Margin Behind It
Jayden Daniels is active, which remains the only thing standing between this offense and a genuine crisis. He's played seven games this season, thrown for 1,262 yards with eight touchdowns against three interceptions, and added 278 yards on the ground. When he's upright and healthy, Washington has a functioning football team. The problem is what comes next if he isn't.
Behind Daniels, the depth chart lists Sam Hartman and Athan Kaliakmanis. I've written about this room repeatedly over the past two weeks, and nothing has changed. Mariota's MCL sprain ended whatever thin insurance he provided, and no move has come to replace it. The roster has absorbed injury after injury this season — Tunsil, Newton, Wise, Amos — and the backup quarterback situation has simply sat there, unaddressed.
The receiving corps adds another layer of fragility. Stefon Diggs is questionable, which is a problem for a unit that was already leaning hard on McLaurin and Ertz after losing Deebo Samuel. Washington built a three-pronged passing attack this offseason and has spent most of the year playing with two of the three prongs, at best.
My read is simple: Daniels staying healthy is not a plan, it's a prayer. The roster has been patched everywhere else. This particular gap has been visible since August and remains exactly as wide as it was then.
