Wallstedt Gets the Net Whether He's Ready or Not
Already covered the Gustavsson confirmation two days ago, so the news itself isn't new. What's changed is the math. With Gustavsson out for the opener and Cal Petersen now in Washington on a PTO, Minnesota's goaltending options have narrowed to a point where Jesper Wallstedt isn't a plan — he's the plan.
Wallstedt landed on NHL Network's Top 10 Goalies Right Now list in August, which is meaningful recognition for a prospect. It is not the same thing as being ready to carry a team through October. Minnesota's early months have bitten them before — they went 3-9 last October — and doing that with a first-year starter in net is a real concern. The organization clearly believes in him; the question is whether belief and readiness are the same thing right now.
The injury situation has been running nine weeks. Gustavsson had hip surgery, is still in physical therapy, and Guerin has said plainly he won't be back for opening night. That's a long time for a position to sit unresolved, and the Petersen departure removed whatever organizational cushion existed. My read is that Guerin needs to bring in at least one veteran option on a tryout or short-term deal before camp closes — not to push Wallstedt aside, but to give him a net to earn rather than one handed to him by default.
