Varsho's Wrist Ends His Season. Houston's Depth Ends With It.
Daulton Varsho is done. Wrist surgery finishes his 2026 season, and with it goes the last meaningful cushion in a center field situation that was already running on fumes. The depth chart had him ranked first at the position, but Jake Meyers — the next man up — is on the 60-day IL himself. That leaves Taylor Trammell as the practical answer in center, a player hitting .220 on the year who was already stretched thin covering left field.
Eleven players are currently on the IL or day-to-day. Eleven. With 13 games left and an elimination number of 10, Joe Espada is essentially managing a MASH unit through a sprint that requires near-perfect baseball. Varsho's loss isn't the wound that kills the season — this roster was already bleeding from too many places — but it removes one more option from a bench that can't afford to get shorter.
The broader picture hasn't changed, just gotten a little starker. Houston is 72-77, 2.5 games out of the last wild-card spot, scoring 3.5 runs a game over the last 10. Yordan Alvarez, the team's only All-Star, remains day-to-day himself. The organization is operating without a permanent general manager. There is no cavalry coming. What Espada has right now is what he's finishing with, and now there's one fewer piece of it.
