Valdes-Scantling Is on the Practice Squad. McConkey's Ribs Are the Reason.
The Chargers signed Marquez Valdes-Scantling, 31, to their practice squad on Tuesday. Two Super Bowl rings with Kansas City, a career spent running deep routes in big moments — and now he's emergency depth for a team that lost its leading receiver to a rib injury in Week 1. That's the situation.
McConkey didn't practice Wednesday. Jim Harbaugh has him day-to-day, which is the right thing to say publicly and also the thing you say when you're not sure. The Valdes-Scantling signing is the front office saying the same thing in a different language. You don't go outside the building for a veteran wideout two days after a game if you think your guy is fine.
Quentin Johnston is active and leads the depth chart at receiver. After him, it gets thin fast — Derius Davis, Brenen Thompson, and now a 31-year-old on the practice squad. That's the room Herbert is working with if McConkey sits out Sunday. It's manageable, but it's not what this offense was built around.
Week 2 is the next data point. If McConkey is out, Valdes-Scantling becomes relevant quickly — practice squad players can be elevated. If McConkey plays through it, this signing is just insurance. Either way, the Chargers are already doing the math they hoped not to do until October.
