Two Quarterbacks. No Net Below Them.
Jaxson Dart is on injured reserve, and that's where this story starts and mostly ends. The Giants are carrying Jameis Winston and Jake Haener, and nothing else. I wrote the initial note on this when Dart went down, then followed it the next day when the room shook out — so this isn't new information. What's worth noting now is that the situation hasn't changed, which is itself a fact worth sitting with.
Winston is the starter. Haener, signed in August, is the backup. The depth chart lists Haener first by playing time, which is a quirk of how the numbers sorted — Winston is under center, that much is settled. If Winston misses a game for any reason, Haener is it. There is no third option on the active roster.
The Giants built their offseason around a power-running identity — Harris, Tracy, Skattebo, Singletary — and the idea was always that the quarterback didn't need to carry this team. That logic holds until it doesn't. A two-man quarterback room means one bad snap, one awkward sack, one freak play away from Haener running a game-plan that was drawn up for someone else. That's the reality for the next however many weeks this season runs.
