Two Losses, Two Positions That Cannot Take Another Hit
Dallas dropped to 2-4 with the loss in Green Bay, and the injury ledger coming out of that game is the part that stings beyond the final score. Dee Winters is dealing with an Achilles strain and listed as Doubtful. Cobie Durant remains Questionable, though Brian Schottenheimer said Monday he's making progress toward a return. That's two cornerbacks in various states of unavailability for a secondary that was already short-handed before either of them got hurt.
The linebacker situation is just as bare. Rashan Gary and Von Miller are the two players who have logged meaningful snaps at the position all season. That's the whole rotation. DeMarvion Overshown was supposed to be part of the answer there — he entered camp as a genuine piece of the solution — and he's been in and out all year. With Winters now added to the list on the other side of the defense, Dallas is looking at a unit that has no margin for further attrition at either spot.
The Cowboys are 1.5 games out of the last wild card with 11 games left, so the math hasn't closed on them yet. But the defense has been outscored by 1.3 points per game on average, and there's no reinforcement visibly on the way. My read is the next two weeks will tell you whether this team can tread water long enough for Durant to get back healthy, or whether the secondary just keeps leaking until the season goes with it.
