Two DBs Suspended After the Raiders Win. The Secondary Can't Afford It.
The NFL handed down suspensions to two Bills defensive backs following the Week 6 win over Las Vegas, stemming from a spitting incident involving Raiders players. Buffalo got the result that day — the 33–30 final is in the books — but the discipline coming out of it lands in a secondary that was already short on bodies.
C.J. Gardner-Johnson is already serving a suspension, which I noted after that game. He's the DB group's most productive player by a significant margin. Losing two more defensive backs on top of that, even for a game or two, pushes a position that was already thin past the point of comfortable rotation. The depth chart behind Gardner-Johnson runs to Geno Stone and Sam Franklin, and neither has played meaningful snaps at anywhere near a starter's level this season.
The cornerback situation compounds it. Tre'Davious White is the only corner who has logged real playing time, and there's no established depth behind him. The Bills have been managing this secondary carefully all year. Two suspensions for conduct — not injury, not illness, but a choice made on the field — is a different kind of problem. You can scheme around hurt players. You can't scheme around guys who aren't allowed to dress.
The league hasn't announced lengths yet, so the exact cost is still unclear. But the secondary was already a concern heading into the back half of the schedule. This makes it a sharper one.
