Two Blue-Line RFAs Still Unsigned as July Ends
The Rangers spent the better part of this offseason remaking their defense — Trudeau from Montreal, Schneider on a one-year deal, Pettersson in from Vancouver — and yet two notable restricted free agents on the back end still don't have contracts as July closes. That gap was noted Tuesday, and it sits a little awkwardly against everything else the front office has done.
The defensive overhaul was the clearest priority of Quentin Dolan's early tenure. The Rangers allowed 3.4 goals a game through most of last season before tightening to 2.0 in the final stretch, and the offseason moves were clearly aimed at making that late-season version of the team the baseline, not the exception. Leaving two pieces of the blue line unsigned into late July doesn't torpedo that plan, but it does leave the depth chart incomplete at exactly the position the organization has been most loudly addressing.
My read is that these things tend to get done — RFA situations rarely drag into camp — but the Rangers don't have a lot of margin for error on defense heading into 2026-27. Adam Fox is the anchor, and the additions help, but this group still needs everyone available and settled before training camp opens.
