Training camp is close, and the front office finally has some shape to it
The Amsler hire got its due notice here — twice, actually — so this is less about the personnel move and more about where it lands on the calendar. Training camp is approaching, Luka Doncic and Ziaire Williams were both listed as day-to-day heading in, and the organization is about to find out whether a summer of aggressive restructuring holds together under real conditions.
The roster math is stark. LeBron James, Deandre Ayton, Rui Hachimura, and Luke Kennard are all gone. What replaced them — Walker Kessler, Matisse Thybulle, Jaden Hardy, and a handful of secondary signings — is built around defense and youth, not production. Doncic and Austin Reaves will carry the offensive load the way two players simply cannot carry it without a third option. Marcus Smart is the primary backcourt depth behind them. That is a thin margin.
The ownership picture adds another variable. Josh Kushner and Bob Iger agreed to purchase the franchise for $12.5 billion in August, the second ownership change in roughly 14 months. New ownership, a front office still finding its footing after the Buss family departures, and a roster mid-rebuild is a lot of institutional uncertainty to manage before the first preseason tip.
Amsler's presence steadies one corner of that. Whether it is enough to give the front office a coherent voice through a difficult year is the question camp will start to answer.
