Thunder Pull Back and Wait
One day after agreeing to sign Ochai Agbaji to address the roster holes left by Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace, Oklahoma City reversed course. With Chet Holmgren now added to the sideline — out 8-to-10 weeks with a small patellar tendon tear — the front office decided to pause and reassess rather than commit that roster spot to a wing.
The sequence tells you something about how fast the situation changed. Agbaji made sense as a fill-in for two injured guards. Then Holmgren went down, and suddenly the need profile shifted entirely. A forward who can play alongside Isaiah Hartenstein is a different ask than a perimeter body, and the Thunder apparently want to get that decision right rather than move quickly and regret it.
What they're left with at center is Hartenstein and Aday Mara behind a starter who won't be back until at least late December. At forward, Jaylin Williams is the nominal top option, though he's been well short of what a starting forward needs to provide. Brooks Barnhizer is next in line. It's a thin group being asked to carry a lot.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is still here, still the best player on the floor most nights. But the Thunder are essentially in triage mode before November even starts, and holding that roster spot open is the right call — as long as they actually use it on something that fits what they now need.
