Three Prospects Down, One Rebuild on the Clock

Justin Danforth, Jiri Kulich, and Noah Ostlund have been sidelined since July 18, and as of early August all three remain unavailable. That's the sentence Buffalo's front office would most like to quietly bury beneath the optimism of a busy offseason. It isn't staying buried.

The timing is the problem. As I wrote last week, the Sabres built their entire offseason argument around youth — trade the veterans, absorb the pain, let the prospects carry the next chapter. That argument is harder to make when the prospects can't practice. Four Buffalo youngsters landed on The Athletic's top-100 list in mid-July, and the organization has genuine reason to believe in Daxon Rudolph as an 18-year-old taken fourth overall. But belief and availability are different things, and right now the prospect pool is thinner than the front office intended.

What makes this more than a routine August injury note is the roster context around it. The right wing is a genuine hole with Tuch gone to Washington. Center depth behind Tage Thompson drops off sharply. Those gaps were always going to be bridged, at least partially, by young players stepping into expanded roles. If Kulich, Ostlund, and Danforth aren't ready for training camp, the bridge gets shorter and the drop on the other side gets longer.

The September 15th deadline to sign three youngsters to eight-year extensions adds another layer of pressure to a front office already juggling a lot of moving parts. None of this is fatal — rebuilds absorb setbacks, and one healthy October can change the conversation entirely. But the path to 2026–27 mattering runs directly through these three players getting back on the ice, and right now that clock is ticking without them.
