Three Injured Prospects, One Deadline, and a Rebuild That Can't Wait
Training camp is weeks out, and Justin Danforth, Jiri Kulich, and Noah Ostlund are still unavailable. All three went down around the same time in mid-July and haven't been cleared since. For a franchise that spent the entire offseason selling its fanbase on youth development, that's an uncomfortable place to be heading into September.
The timing matters because the rebuild isn't theoretical anymore — it's on the clock. Three Sabres youngsters are eligible to sign eight-year extensions before a September 15 deadline, which means the organization needs to be evaluating health and trajectory simultaneously. Hard to do either when the players you're counting on aren't on the ice.
What Buffalo has done around the edges is real: Zach Benson locked in long-term, Olen Zellweger added on the blue line, Peyton Krebs extended to hold down the middle. Four prospects landed on The Athletic's top-100 list in July, which is the kind of external validation this front office needed. But prospect rankings don't skate. Danforth, Kulich, and Ostlund do — when healthy — and right now none of them are.
The Sabres traded away Byram and Tuch to buy time for the young core to grow into the roster. That bet only pays if the young core is available to grow.
