The win over Denver checked every box. The fine print is worth reading.
Kansas City handled the Broncos 31-10 in the season opener, and the two things everyone wanted to see both showed up. Mahomes looked like Mahomes — comfortable, decisive, no visible hesitation on the knee that cost him the back half of 2025. And Kenneth Walker III, cleared from his own camp situation just weeks ago, gave the Chiefs a genuine ground threat in his debut. After a 6-11 season defined by late-game collapses and an offense that too often had to carry everything, having a backfield that can take pressure off the passing game matters.
The defensive side is where the asterisks live. Omarr Norman-Lott remains Out, Ashton Gillotte's ruptured plantar fascia already has him sidelined for the foreseeable future, and the front seven has been operating without Leo Chenal since mid-July. Denver is not the stress test that exposes a thin defensive front — that comes later. For now, the 21-point margin flatters the unit a little.
The next ten days are mostly about health management. The receiving corps — Worthy, Rice, Thornton — is active but still finding its rhythm with Mahomes after a disrupted camp. Cooper McDonald and Jimmy Holiday remain on injured reserve. The Chiefs won the game they were supposed to win, which is a reasonable starting point after last year. Whether the defense holds up as the schedule stiffens is the question that doesn't get answered against a rebuilding Denver team.
