The Week 1 Depth Chart Is Out. Read It Slowly.

The Chargers released their unofficial depth chart for Sunday's opener against the Cardinals, and the offensive line section is worth sitting with. Jacob Spomer, an undrafted free agent who wasn't on anyone's radar eight weeks ago, is listed at center. Biadasz is on injured reserve with a torn ACL. That's the reality the depth chart confirms in plain text.

Isaiah World is listed out at offensive tackle, which further compresses the options up front. The names behind the starters at multiple line positions are guys with no meaningful regular-season production yet — not a criticism, just what the chart shows. The Chargers are betting that the group holds together well enough to keep Herbert upright against a Cardinals defense that will know exactly where to look.

The bet isn't crazy. Herbert added rushing yards to his game last season and has shown he can navigate a compromised pocket. Omarion Hampton's ability to pick up blitzes out of the backfield matters more than usual this week. The skill position group — McConkey, Johnston active, Keenan Allen — gives Herbert places to go quickly if the line needs help. Short, quick, get the ball out. That's the plan, or close enough to it.

Still, you don't love opening a season with an undrafted rookie snapping the ball to your franchise quarterback. The depth chart doesn't lie about what this team is working with right now.
