The Receiving Corps Isn't Thin Anymore. It's Bare.
Already wrote the Evans note when the injury happened. What's worth adding now, a couple days out, is what the depth chart actually looks like without him. Xavier Smith, Jacob Cowing, Jordan Watkins — that's the receiver room San Francisco is working with. None of them were the plan when the season started.
Evans was signed specifically because the 49ers knew they needed a proven target on the outside. Aiyuk pushed his way out, Kittle's Achilles recovery kept his availability uncertain deep into the offseason, and the front office went and got a veteran who had spent more than a decade as one of the more reliable receivers in the league. That was the fix. Now the fix is gone, and there isn't a next option waiting behind it.
Purdy threw for 22 touchdowns last season in 11 games, which is a real number. The question was never whether he could produce — it was whether anyone could get open long enough for it to matter. Jauan Jennings has been useful, and Juszczyk's return helps the underneath game. But a receiving corps that was already operating without margin is now operating without a safety net either. At some point the scheme can only cover so much.
