The Middle of This Lineup Is Now Shewmake, Paredes, and Hope
Already wrote the Correa piece yesterday — the season is done, the infield is fractured, the math is brutal. What's worth noting today is what the lineup actually looks like now that the reality has settled in. At third base, Isaac Paredes is the primary option, with Braden Shewmake spelling him. Shewmake has hit well in limited time this year, but 15 games is a thin sample to lean on in a playoff race. Peña holds shortstop. That's a middle infield built for surviving, not winning.
The broader problem is that Correa was the one experienced bat in that part of the order with any track record of October production. Christian Walker at first is serviceable — 14 home runs, .240 average in 76 games — and Jose Altuve is still in the lineup at 36, but neither is carrying anything right now. The offense has dropped to 3.3 runs per game over the last 10, and the infield reconstruction isn't going to fix that.
Seventeen games left, 1.5 out of the last wild-card spot. Joe Espada will mix and match what he has. My read is the next week tells you everything — if Shewmake and Paredes can hold their end and Yordan Alvarez gets back to full health, there's a sliver of a path. If not, this is just a quiet finish to a difficult year.
