The Kings are down two of their top three scorers before camp gets going
Adrian Kempe led the team last season with 36 points. Kevin Fiala was right behind him at 34. Anze Kopitar, retired since July, had 21 in a shortened year. That's the top of the order the Kings were already rebuilding around — and now two of those three names are unavailable when camp opens. Fiala's follow-up surgery for the broken leg he sustained at the Milan Cortina Olympics removes him from the early going, timeline still uncertain.
The math left for Quinton Byfield and Alex Laferriere isn't gentle. Byfield put up 29 points last season, Laferriere 24 — solid numbers for players still finding their footing, less reassuring as the primary offensive engine of a team that missed the playoffs two years running. I've written about this twice already this week, but the framing keeps shifting: first it was about development pace, then about camp structure. Now it's simpler than that. The Kings just don't have enough proven offense in the building right now.
Brandt Clarke, locked up through the extension signed in June, gives the back end some stability. The veteran additions — Zuccarello, Haula, Laughton — add depth. But depth doesn't replace production at the top of a lineup, and that's where the hole is. Camp will tell us something about how quickly the young core can absorb the load. It won't tell us whether that's actually enough.
