The Eagles built their offense around two things. They may now have neither.
Saquon Barkley is Questionable, and the timing couldn't be more corrosive. This isn't an isolated personnel problem — it's the third load-bearing wall in Philadelphia's offense that has cracked in the span of a few weeks, and the compounding effect is what makes the situation genuinely alarming rather than merely inconvenient.
Here's the number that reframes everything: Barkley produced 1,246 rushing yards and caught 40 passes for another 298 yards last season. That receiving contribution is the part that gets undersold. He wasn't just a ball-carrier — he was a checkdown valve, a safety release, a way to get Jalen Hurts out of trouble when the downfield options dried up. Now consider what those downfield options look like right now. A.J. Brown is gone. Dallas Goedert is Doubtful. DeVonta Smith is Questionable. Landon Dickerson is on Injured Reserve, which means the offensive line protecting whatever remains of this skill group is already compromised. The Eagles are stacking absences on top of absences, and the architecture is starting to show the strain.
The depth chart at running back lists Tank Bigsby first, with Will Shipley behind him. Shipley appeared in 15 games last season and handled the ball sparingly. Bigsby is a name the Eagles have on the roster; he is not a name that changes a defensive coordinator's game plan. That distinction matters enormously in weeks when Hurts needs the threat of a competent ground game to keep defenses honest — to prevent them from sitting in coverage and daring a receiving corps stripped of its two best weapons to beat them.
What made the 2025 Eagles functional, even when they were losing games they probably should have won, was their ability to execute in the moments that mattered. Their point differential suggested they were a .590 team; they played like a .647 team because situational football was a genuine strength. That strength was built on Hurts' dual-threat unpredictability and Barkley's versatility underneath. Remove Barkley, and you've narrowed Hurts' options at exactly the moment the passing game is already operating short-handed. Defenses don't have to respect a run threat they've never seen. They do have to respect Saquon Barkley.
My read is that the Eagles can still function if Barkley returns quickly and Smith is available — those two Questionable designations matter more than any single game result right now. But if Philadelphia is forced to play meaningful football with Bigsby as the featured back and a receiving corps missing its top two threats, the offense stops being a problem and starts being a liability. Last season's version of this team won close games at an unsustainable rate. This version, thinner at every skill position, has far less margin to work with — and the injury report keeps taking more away.
