The Depth Plan Has a Hole Where a Forward Used to Be
The prospect the Flyers signed on August 21 as forward depth insurance is gone — overseas, done, NHL pursuit over. That's the update. The contingency plan the front office was quietly building around the injury cluster just lost a piece, and camp is roughly a week out.
The three forwards who were out when I filed the August 19 note are still out. Ty Murchison is the only one with a current injury listing, but Cates and Tippett haven't had return timelines attached to them either. Right wing remains the position with the least margin — Tippett and Michkov both unavailable, Michkov still unsigned, and Travis Konecny essentially the only established option at the position walking into camp. Nolan Foote is still in the mix after signing on August 19, and he'll get every chance to make something of it, but that's a reclamation project, not a solution.
The front office built a small buffer of organizational depth in mid-August precisely because the injury situation looked fragile. One piece of that buffer just evaporated. My read: it's a minor subtraction on paper, but the margin was already thin enough that there isn't much room left to absorb it.
