The Defense Lost Its Best Rusher and Its Nose Tackle in the Same Week
David Bailey couldn't practice last week with a strained groin, and T'Vondre Sweat is now on injured reserve with a knee injury. Two starters, two different injury reports, same result: the Jets' defensive front goes into November short-handed at exactly the wrong moment.
Bailey's absence is the sharper sting. He leads the team with 6.5 sacks in nine games — by a wide margin over anyone else on this roster. Jowon Briggs has been a contributor with 2 sacks in eight games, and the depth chart lists Tyler Baron and Will McDonald IV behind him at defensive end, but neither has approached Bailey's production. Losing Sweat compounds it: without a functioning nose tackle, opposing offenses can run at the interior and force the linebackers to clean up, which takes pressure off the tackles Bailey and Briggs would otherwise be attacking.
The Jets are 2-6, on a three-game losing streak, with an elimination number of 7 and nine games left. The math still technically allows a run, but the defense was already struggling to turn pass rush into stops — the secondary has been a work in progress all season. Now the front is compromised too. Briggs and the edge depth will have to carry more than they've been asked to carry.
Bailey is listed as a rookie in the depth chart, which makes the groin strain worth monitoring carefully. These things linger. The next two weeks will tell us whether this is a short absence or something that reshapes the back half of the season.
