The Contract Stalemate Didn't Go Away With the Win
McCarthy made his case after the opener: Porter Jr. missed it because of the injury, full stop. Fine. But the contract impasse that McCarthy acknowledged back in late August hasn't been resolved, and a Week 1 absence — whatever the cause — does nothing to move those talks forward.
Porter Jr. remains listed as questionable, which is where he's been for weeks now. The secondary got through the opener without him, which is something, but the depth behind him is thin enough that this can't become a pattern. The organization spent much of August adding veteran safeties precisely because the cornerback room was already compromised, with both Porter Jr. and Jalen Ramsey starting camp on the PUP list. Ramsey is back. Porter Jr. is not yet.
The trade speculation piece is the part worth watching. When a cornerstone player misses games, his contract situation is unresolved, and the team just moved Broderick Jones for draft capital in late August, the conditions for a deal are at least present. My read is that Pittsburgh isn't there yet — they need Porter Jr. more than they need another pick — but the longer this drags into the season, the more that calculus shifts.
For now, the Steelers have their win and their coach's explanation. The question that was unanswered before Week 1 is still unanswered after it.
