Tank Dell Is Back on the Practice Field. That Matters.
Tank Dell returned to practice Wednesday in a limited capacity — his first on-field work since tearing up his knee in Week 16 of 2024. It is a small step, carefully worded by the team, and nobody should read a Week 1 guarantee into it. But the timing is real, and so is the context.
Jaylin Noel is out. The receiver went down before camp even opened, and the wide receiver room that Houston was counting on to support Nico Collins suddenly had a gap that Xavier Hutchinson and the depth options behind him were not obviously equipped to fill. Collins is healthy and remains the clear top target — he was Stroud's most productive receiver last season — but the group needed another credible option. Dell, when healthy, has always been that: a quick, sudden route-runner who can stress a defense horizontally in ways that complement what Collins does vertically.
The caveat is real too. Dell hasn't played a full game in over a year and a half, and "limited capacity" in early August is a long way from ready. The Texans will manage his ramp-up carefully, and there's no guarantee he's available for the opener. My read is that the next two weeks of practice tell you more than today's news does — if he's still out there in pads by mid-August without setback, the conversation changes.
For now, it is simply good news in an offseason that has handed this receiver room more bad news than good. Houston needed a reason to believe the position could hold. Dell walking back onto that practice field is at least the beginning of one.
