Sweat Is on IR, Bailey Couldn't Practice, and the Front Seven Has to Figure It Out Anyway
T'Vondre Sweat went on injured reserve Saturday with a knee sprain, out at minimum four games. David Bailey, the rookie who leads the team with 6.5 sacks, couldn't practice last week with a strained groin. Both gone in the same week, both part of the same defensive front that was supposed to give this reset some teeth.
What's left up front is a rotation that was already thin. Jowon Briggs has 2 sacks in eight games and figures to absorb more of the pass-rush load. The depth chart at defensive tackle runs through Jack Heflin, Payton Page, and Amari McNeill — names that were fine as backups when Sweat was eating snaps in the middle. Now they're the answer.
The timing is bad in the obvious way. The Jets are 2-6, three games out of the last wild card, and the defense was the one unit generating consistent pressure. Dane Belton leads the team with 63 tackles, but the secondary hasn't been producing turnovers, which means the front had to do most of the work. Bailey and Sweat were the engine of that. Neither is available right now.
Nine games left. The math is still alive, barely. But a defensive front that just lost its two most important pieces going into November is not the foundation you draw up when you're trying to salvage a season.
