Suns Waive Highsmith, Roster Spot Now Open Heading Into Camp

Phoenix waived Haywood Highsmith on Tuesday, clearing a spot on the roster as training camp draws closer. Highsmith appeared in seven games after arriving last February and never really carved out a defined role. The move was quiet, as these things usually are.

What it signals is straightforward enough: the front office likes what it has. The offseason has been busy — Brooks locked in, Bridges added, Kennard and Goodwin re-upped — and the core rotation is largely set. An open spot this late in the summer is either insurance against the day-to-day injury situations still lingering with Mark Williams and CJ Huntley, or it stays open until someone worth claiming surfaces. Neither outcome is dramatic.

The Highsmith tenure was brief and peripheral. Seven games, a February cameo, gone before camp. The Suns have bigger questions to answer than this one.
