Sturm Goes Down, and the List Just Keeps Growing
Nico Sturm was taken to a hospital for precautionary evaluation Monday night after a puck struck him in the head late in the first period of Minnesota's 4–2 win over Vegas. He did not return. It is the second serious head injury of his career, and the timing — the final game before the playoffs begin — is about as bad as it gets.
The Wild were already carrying Gustavsson on injured reserve, Faber out following skull surgery with no timetable, and Foligno sidelined with an upper-body injury. Maatta has been in and out of the lineup with a lower-body issue. Sturm's status is now uncertain on top of all of it, which means Minnesota is entering elimination hockey without a clear picture of its forward group, its blue line, or its goaltending.
The win itself was fine. The W2 streak is real, and the defense has been quieter lately than it was through the roughest stretch of the regular season. But a team that went 5–8 on the road over its last 20 games is about to play in someone else's building, and the roster it is bringing into that environment keeps getting shorter. At some point the injury list stops being context and starts being the story.
