Still No Name, Still No Timeline
Training camp is close enough now that the Stevens situation has moved from awkward to genuinely unresolved. San Antonio has not announced a replacement for its director of grassroots scouting, and at this point I've written that sentence three times in six days. The role sits empty heading into one of the more consequential offseasons this organization has managed in years.
The timing matters because the Spurs are not in maintenance mode. They added Tobias Harris, locked in Julian Champagnie, and secured Wembanyama on a long-term extension. The roster is being built around a specific window, and the scouting infrastructure underneath it should be keeping pace. Grassroots work — the kind Stevens did — is where you find the depth pieces and two-way candidates before anyone else does. David Jones Garcia's re-signing and Taelon Peter's camp invite suggest the front office is still hunting for those pieces. Doing that hunting with a gap in the department is just harder.
Nothing in the news suggests a hire is imminent. At some point the story stops being about Stevens leaving and starts being about what San Antonio does with the vacancy. That point may have already passed.
