Still No Clearance: Houston's Injury Limbo Stretches Into Training Camp Range
Kevin Durant, Fred VanVleet, and Steven Adams are all still day-to-day. That hasn't changed. I noted it a few days ago and it remains true — three weeks of the same designation, no resolution, training camp getting closer.
The practical concern is straightforward. Durant was Houston's offensive anchor last season at 25.7 points per game. VanVleet exercised his player option to stay and is supposed to anchor the backcourt alongside the new additions. Adams logged limited time last season but provided a physical presence at center. All three being unavailable for the early reps of camp — if it comes to that — means the new pieces around them, Bogdan Bogdanovic, Marcus Smart, Oscar Tshiebwe, get less time building chemistry with the core they were brought in to support.
That chemistry piece matters more for this team than it might for others. The whole offseason logic was about reducing load on Alperen Sengun and giving Durant cleaner looks in late-game situations. None of that gets stress-tested in practice if Durant isn't practicing.
Day-to-day in mid-July is maintenance. Day-to-day pushing into late August is a different conversation. Nothing has changed — which is the problem.
