Soriano to Toronto. The sell-off is no longer a question.

The Angels traded José Soriano to the Blue Jays on Monday for three prospects, moving their best starter four days after I noted the O'Hoppe and Silseth deals to Texas had opened the door to a full teardown. The door is now off the hinges. Soriano was 10-6 with a 3.16 ERA in 131 innings — the one arm in a battered rotation that actually held. He goes to Toronto under team control, which is exactly the kind of asset a rebuilding club trades and a contender acquires.

What's left in Anaheim is Walbert Ureña, Reid Detmers, and whatever Ryan Johnson has left in a tank that was already running low. Ureña has been quietly solid, but the rotation as a whole just lost its anchor. The bullpen's rookie bright spot — 0.28 ERA over 16 games — is a real thing, and the defense has tightened up over the last 10 games. That's not nothing. But none of it changes the math: 38-49, five back of the last wild card, 75 games left.

Interim GM John Mozeliak came in at the end of June with the organization in disarray. Trading Soriano is the clearest signal yet of where he thinks this season stands. The prospects coming back are the story now, not the standings.
