Soler DFA'd. The Angels are done cleaning house.
Jorge Soler was designated for assignment Tuesday, the last name off a roster that looked meaningfully different two weeks ago. He hit three home runs en route to World Series MVP with Atlanta in 2021, and the Angels are parting ways with that version of him — or whatever remained of it. At 34, he posted a career-worst OPS in 2026, and the organization had no reason to carry a declining veteran through a season it has already conceded.
The DFA lands 24 hours after the deadline stripped the pitching staff. Soriano, Detmers, Adell, Zeferjahn — gone in roughly 48 hours. What's left is Walbert Ureña anchoring a rotation, Jeimer Candelario providing the lineup's best power, and Mike Trout — the team's only All-Star — doing what he does in the middle of an organization that has moved on around him.
The Angels are 38-51, 7.5 back in the division and 6 out of the final wild card. The math still permits a fantasy, but the front office stopped pretending days ago. This is what a formal surrender looks like: you DFA the former World Series MVP, you collect the prospects, and you figure out what the next thing is supposed to be.
