Smith Is Ready. His Offense Isn't.
Geno Smith is active heading into Week 1, which is the good news. The rest of the Jets' offensive picture is considerably murkier. Breece Hall, who carried this backfield for 1,065 yards last season, is listed as questionable after a non-contact groin strain in mid-August. Rookie tight end Kenyon Sadiq remains questionable following a hernia setback. And Chip Trayanum, the rookie running back who was hospitalized with a neck injury during the final preseason game, is also questionable — the most serious of the bunch, with his status still genuinely uncertain.
The timing matters because Smith is a new quarterback in a new system, and the players around him are the ones who were supposed to ease that transition. Hall in particular is not a luxury here — he is the engine the Jets built their reset around. Isaiah Davis is available and has shown he can handle a workload, but asking him to open the season as the lead back while Smith finds his footing is a different ask than having Hall healthy and ready.
The Jets went 3–14 last year in part because they could not execute when it counted. A new quarterback helps address some of that. Walking into Week 1 with Hall, Sadiq, and Trayanum all in question does not.
