Skubal Is Gone — And Mize Might Be Next
The trade is done. Tarik Skubal, who posted a 2.99 ERA and struck out better than 10 batters per nine innings this season, has been dealt out of Detroit. He was the rotation's best arm, its most reliable starter, and now he belongs to someone else.
What's left behind is thin, and possibly getting thinner. Framber Valdez and Keider Montero will carry the bulk of the starts from here. Flaherty is on the IL with right flexor inflammation. Verlander is on the 60-day. Casey Mize, who was scratched from his last scheduled turn, slots in as the nominal third option — but my read is that scratch wasn't just a maintenance day. When a team is actively selling and a starter suddenly doesn't take the ball, that's worth watching. Mize could be the next name moved before the deadline closes.
I wrote last week that this was coming, and the week before that the direction was obvious. The Skubal trade is the punctuation mark on a sentence Detroit has been writing since June — not a surprise, just a confirmation. The front office is building toward 2027, and the next 56 games are an audition, not a pennant race.
The Tigers are 49-57, three games back of the last wild card, and running a rotation that would have looked thin in April. If Mize goes too, Valdez and Montero are essentially it. The math on contention was already hard. It just got harder.
