Skubal Heads to Los Angeles

The Tigers traded Tarik Skubal to the Dodgers on August 2, and that's the sentence that closes Detroit's window on this season. Skubal was 8-5 with a 2.99 ERA and was striking out better than 10 batters per nine innings — the most reliable arm on a staff that has since been gutted from every direction. He spent nine seasons in the organization. Then he was gone.

The rotation that remains is Framber Valdez, Keider Montero, and Casey Mize, working behind a team that has allowed 4.5 runs per game over its last 10. Flaherty is on the 15-day IL with right flexor inflammation. Verlander is on the 60-day. The depth chart at starter now reads like a triage list, and Skubal was the one arm that made the rest of it manageable.

Detroit is 49-58, seven back in the AL Central, four from the last wild card. The math isn't impossible, but the roster is. This trade is the organization saying so out loud.
