Skattebo Felt Something in His Hamstring, and the Backfield Has No Room for That
Cam Skattebo got through most of the Texans game, then felt something in his hamstring on one of the final plays. No official designation yet, but the timing is bad enough on its own.
Two weeks ago I wrote that Skattebo and Tracy were what was left after the Harris release, and that was fine — the committee could function. Now Tracy is listed Questionable, Skattebo is a question mark, and Phil Mafah is the third name on the depth chart. Devin Singletary is active and has produced when called upon, so there's a floor here. But the Giants are 5-2-1, leading the NFC East, with nine games left and a magic number of 10. This is not the moment to find out how thin the room actually is.
Skattebo has been the backfield's most reliable piece — 313 rushing yards across six games, the kind of workload that made the Harris situation feel manageable. Losing him for any stretch shifts more of the offensive burden onto Isaiah Likely and the passing game, which has been carrying its weight but doesn't need extra pressure. The Giants have been winning close, and close games tend to punish the team that can't run when it needs to.
Worth watching this week: whether Skattebo's hamstring gets a designation before the next injury report, and whether Tracy practices at all. If both are limited, Singletary becomes the de facto lead back by default — a role he hasn't held all season.
