Six Players Out, Training Camp Weeks Away, and No Timelines in Sight
Auston Matthews, Chris Tanev, Max Domi, Calle Jarnkrok, Dakota Joshua, and Zack MacEwen are all sidelined heading into training camp, and Toronto has offered no recovery timeline for any of them. That's six players — including the team's most dangerous goal scorer — unavailable as the organization tries to build something coherent out of a 32-50 wreck.
The Matthews absence is the one that compounds everything else. He scored 24 goals in 42 games last season, and his absence doesn't just thin the forward group — it removes the player the new system is presumably being built around. The Leafs signed Colton Sissons late in August to add forward depth, and Alexander Burmistrov joined the organization on an ECHL deal, but those are depth moves. They don't fill the hole Matthews leaves if camp opens without him.
What makes this harder is the context. Toronto already traded Nick Robertson's rights to Pittsburgh and overhauled the forward corps this summer. The roster entering camp was already going to look unfamiliar. Six injured players — some on IR, some listed simply as out — means the group that actually skates together in September may bear little resemblance to what Chayka has been assembling on paper since July.
My read: the injury situation is the most concrete problem this organization faces right now, more immediate than the front-office turbulence or the questions about Sergei Bobrovsky's fit. You can evaluate a new goaltender. You can't evaluate a roster that isn't healthy enough to show up.
