Simons and Caldwell-Pope Are Still Day-to-Day, and the Calendar Isn't Waiting

I wrote this note two days ago and not much has changed, which is itself the update. Anfernee Simons and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope are both still nicked up before training camp, and Philadelphia has no mechanism to absorb that if either situation lingers. The front office traded away depth for star power all summer, moved off draft picks, and maneuvered through the first-apron hard cap to fit four names on one roster. There is nothing left to pull from.

The two injuries are minor for now — day-to-day designations, not anything structural. But this roster was built on the assumption that the role players around Maxey, Embiid, Brown, and James would be available and functional. Caldwell-Pope is the perimeter defender who makes the spacing and switchability work. Simons is the secondary scorer who takes pressure off the stars in the second unit. Lose either one for any stretch and the margin gets thinner than it already was.

The larger concern hasn't moved either. Embiid played 45 games last season, and nothing about this offseason addresses that directly. The center depth behind him remains a real vulnerability — Adem Bona is a fine developmental piece but not someone you want logging heavy playoff minutes if Embiid goes down. That's been true all summer. It's still true now.

Training camp is weeks away. Simons and Caldwell-Pope will probably be fine. But "probably fine" is doing a lot of work for a team with no contingency plan.
