Sieler Goes Week-to-Week, and Miami's Defensive Line Gets Thinner Right on Cue
Zach Sieler was ruled week-to-week by head coach Jeff Hafley on Tuesday, which is not the news you want on the eve of Preseason Week 1. The defensive tackle's absence leaves James Ester and Alex Huntley as the top two options at the position on the depth chart — a duo that hasn't logged meaningful snaps together and now gets pushed into the spotlight earlier than anyone planned.
The timing stings a little more given where this roster already stood. Clelin Ferrell was signed just before camp opened specifically to shore up the defensive front, with Darrell Baker Jr. still unavailable. That move looked like prudent depth management at the time. With Sieler now sidelined, Ferrell's role becomes less about depth and more about necessity. Miami is leaning on a recent signing to patch a hole that just got bigger.
It fits the pattern of this camp. I noted earlier this week that the Dolphins are managing two crises simultaneously — organizational transition and an injury gauntlet that keeps expanding. The offensive side has its own concerns with Tyreek Hill's leg and Chris Bell still out. Now the defensive line joins the list. The Commanders preseason game was supposed to be a chance to evaluate competition and sort the roster. Instead, it becomes a stress test for a position group that is already short-handed.
Week-to-week in August usually means a player is back before the regular season. Probably. But Miami doesn't have much margin on this line, and every day Sieler misses is a day the group behind him has to prove it can hold things together.
