September Is Three Weeks Out. Vegas Still Has One Goalie.
The Golden Knights open at home against Chicago on September 29, and as of today Carter Hart remains the only goaltender on this roster who has played a meaningful minute. That's been true since June 30, when Akira Schmid was dealt to Florida. It was still true when Michael Hutchinson retired in late July. It was true when I wrote about it on August 5, again on August 13, and again on August 15. It is true now, with camp approaching.
The backup market has not gotten friendlier. Hutchinson's retirement was a reminder that the pool of available veteran options shrinks on its own schedule, indifferent to Vegas's timeline. Schmid, meanwhile, signed a two-year extension with Florida — that door is closed. The Knights freed cap room through the Rasmus Andersson extension and the Wotherspoon acquisition, so the resources exist. The will to use them on a backup goaltender, apparently, does not — or at least hasn't shown itself yet.
My read at this point is simple: the longer this goes, the worse the available options get. A team without a coaching staff yet, without its leading goal-scorer from last season, and without a backup goaltender is stacking transition risks. Any one of those is manageable. All three together, with the opener three weeks out, is a different kind of problem.
