Same Story, New Week
Camp has been open for a few days now, and San Antonio still has not filled the personnel seat Charlie Stevens vacated when he left for the UConn general manager job. That is the update. There is no update.
What makes the timing uncomfortable is that this is not a quiet offseason. The Spurs added Tobias Harris on a two-year deal, re-signed Julian Champagnie to a three-year extension, and are working Taelon Peter into a backcourt depth picture that already lost Jeremy Sochan to Portland. Jayden Quaintance is recovering from knee surgery with no return date set. These are decisions that benefit from a full personnel staff, and right now there is a gap in it.
The search has been running long enough that it has started to feel less like a transition and more like a stall. My read is that whoever they eventually hire will be walking into a roster that has already been shaped around them — which is fine, teams manage that all the time, but it does mean the new voice arrives with less influence than the role typically carries. That matters more in a championship window than it would in a rebuild.
The Spurs go 62-20 last year, lose Game 5 to New York, and come back with a legitimate shot at finishing the job. The front office chair being empty this deep into camp is a small thing until it isn't.
