Reed is now listed as Out, and the back injury that started as a neck issue three weeks ago may cost him the season.
Jayden Reed is out, and the back injury that has been evolving since Week 1 now looks serious enough to threaten his year. What started as a neck designation in Week 2 shifted to a back problem by Week 3, and the injury report now simply reads Out. In six games last season he caught 23 of 29 targets for 250 yards and two touchdowns — a productive pace that made him a genuine slot weapon in Jordan Love's offense. Losing that for an extended stretch, or for the season, is not a minor subtraction.
The receiving depth behind him is thin in a specific way. Romeo Doubs is the clear top option. Matthew Golden played 15 games last season and gives Love another target. Dontayvion Wicks is on the roster. But the depth chart shows J. Michael Sturdivant, Christian Watson, and Skyy Moore as the next wave at receiver — none of whom have logged meaningful production this season. Savion Williams dealt with an ankle injury in preseason. The front office invested in receiver depth this offseason, signing Kaden Prather and re-signing Kisean Johnson, but investments and contributors are different things until proven otherwise.
The piece I wrote in September about this offense being thinner than it looked on paper was about the line and the backfield. The receiving corps was the part that felt relatively stable. Reed going down changes that read.
