Rays lock in Rasmussen at $20 million, the one offseason question that answered itself
The Rays exercised their option on Drew Rasmussen on Saturday, keeping their ace in Tampa Bay at $20 million. Given what the rotation looks like heading into the offseason, this was not a complicated decision.
Rasmussen finished 18–7 with a 2.78 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP across 38 starts, the kind of season that makes an option feel less like a choice and more like a formality. He was an All-Star, he ate innings, and he was the one arm in the staff that never required a contingency plan. The Rays needed exactly none of that to change.
The context matters, though. Shane McClanahan has been out since early October. Ryan Pepiot, Jonathan Heasley, Edwin Uceta, and Jacob Melton are all on the 60-day IL. Freddy Peralta — the ALCS MVP who pitched Tampa Bay into the World Series — came over in a trade and his status for next year is its own separate conversation. What the Rays know for certain right now is that Rasmussen is back. Everything else in that rotation is a question they'll spend the winter trying to answer.
Locking in your best starter while the rest of the staff is this unsettled is just sound housekeeping. The Rays did the easy part first.
