Ravens are coming to town without Lamar Jackson. Cincinnati needs to win.
Lamar Jackson is out for Week 7, and the Bengals are half a game back in the AFC North. That's the whole situation. Baltimore confirmed it Friday, and at 3-2 with twelve games left, Cincinnati does not get many cleaner opportunities than this one.
The Bengals have been exactly what they look like — a team good enough to stay in the race but not good enough to create separation. Burrow has 11 touchdowns against 3 interceptions through six games, the offense is functioning, and the point differential has been a steady plus-3.8 all season. What this team has not done is beat a good team without something going right for them. A Ravens defense that still has to be respected, but without its engine, is a different problem than a Ravens defense with Jackson orchestrating everything behind it.
The defensive side of this matchup is worth watching. The Lawrence trade was supposed to generate pressure; it has not done so consistently yet. The linebacker depth is thin — only two players have logged real snaps there all season — and the secondary has no meaningful depth behind Kyle Dugger. A backup Ravens quarterback may not expose those holes the way Jackson would, but this is still a road game in the division, and Cincinnati's defense has not earned the benefit of the doubt.
My read: this is the kind of game the Bengals have to bank. Twelve games left, half a game out, and the opponent's best player is watching from the sideline. Win it, and the margin for error in the second half of the season gets a little wider. Let it slip, and the conversation changes.
