Rakestraw Down, Reed Up — Detroit's Corner Situation Is Still a Net Loss
D.J. Reed is active and available for Week 4, which is good news. Ennis Rakestraw left practice early with another injury, which is bad news. On balance, the Lions' cornerback situation did not improve this week.
That's the pattern now. Reed showing up in the active column gives Detroit a functional body at corner — he logged 46 tackles and two interceptions last season across 11 games and is a legitimate starter. But Rakestraw's latest setback is the part worth tracking. This secondary has been losing pieces since June, when Terrion Arnold was released after his arrest. Brian Branch is out. Avonte Maddox is done for the year. The depth chart at corner currently runs Rock Ya-Sin, Reed, and Khalil Dorsey, in that order. Rakestraw was supposed to be part of the answer behind them.
My read is that Detroit is no longer in a position where one player returning offsets one player going down. The roster is thin enough that the math has turned negative — each new injury costs more than the previous one because there's less cushion left to absorb it. Rock Ya-Sin is listed questionable. That's the name directly above Reed on the depth chart.
The Lions have been managing this since the summer. They're still managing it.
